BROWN BAG STOCKING STUFFERS

AIRPLANE BOTTLES

You can line your fully-grown children’s stockings with another pair of woolly socks they’ll most definitely be super excited about (you might as well be giving them coal), or you could gift them something a little more practical: airplane bottles. Watch your kids’ faces light up when they unwrap 50 milliliters of pure joy. Rejoice in knowing you got them something they’ll actually use this year. Airplane bottles may not have the longevity of a pair of woolly socks, but at least moths won’t feast on them at the bottom of the kids’ sock drawers. And here’s the best part – when you give your kids the gift of airplane bottles, you can drink them all together as a family. They’re cheap, so you can get a whole handful for each kid, and mix and match with their favorite brands if you feel so inclined. And if you’re feeling extra generous, you can get them enough so they have a few miniature bottles for their flight home. After all, airplane bottles are cleared for airplanes. It’s in the name.

GIFT CARDS

For the relatives you don’t know very well, the unpredictable spouses and coworkers whose alcohol preferences you can never pin down, a Brown Bag gift card makes for the perfect Christmas present. Give a little, give a lot – either way, the choice is yours. And when you give someone the gift of a free trip to their favorite Olathe liquor store, you know they’re going to be happy with your choice.

CHAMPAGNE: KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

Way back in May, we taught our readers how to pick the right champagne for their graduation celebrations. Well, we get a lot of questions about champagne during the holidays, and since our own writer has already forgotten the differences between all the different kinds of champagnes out there, we figured it’s time for a quick refresher.

CHAMPAGNE VS. SPARKLING WINE

Fun fact: Champagne isn’t technically champagne unless it comes from France. Odds are, your sparkling wine probably isn’t. Unless it’s French. Then, the grapes used to make champagne are most commonly either Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier or Chardonnay (but can also be Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Petit Meslier or Arbane). And finally, proper champagne must be fermented in a bottle in a two-step process. To summarize, let’s use a phrase similar to the one that got you through geometry class (you know, the one about the rectangle and the square): All champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is champagne. Boom.

CHAMPAGNE SWEETNESS

The ranking of champagne sweetness goes like this:

·      Brut Nature

·      Extra Brut

·      Brut

·      Extra Sec (Extra Dry)

·      Sec (Dry)

·      Demi-Sec (Medium Dry)

·      Doux (Sweet)

The most common champagne is Brut. It’s is a dry champagne with a little sweetness, but often that sweetness is so mild that it’s undetectable. Extra Brut and Brut Nature are even less sweet. Extra Sec and Sec champagnes are still dry like Brut champagnes, but they’re sweeter in taste. Demi-Sec is the most popular sweet champagne.
